Floor tiles

Floor tiles are a ceramic or plastic piece of material, often oblong in shape, they are used for decoration, protection of the floor, or to ease transport over the floor. A floor tile in a tile floor is layed systematically.

The floor tiles can have different purposes. When the floor is purely for decoration, the tiles are often embellished beautifully. Good examples of this kind of tiles are the Portuguese and Moroccan cement tiles.

But floor tiles can also be applied to make it easy to keep the floor clean. This for instance would not be the case with a carpet or floor covering. The tiles used for this purpose are therefore often glazed, so that they can be easily cleaned with soap and water and a mop.

To improve the cleaning of the floor tiles even further, a coating can be applied, to protect the tiles from for instance chewing gum. The floor tiles do not join seamlessly, and therefore the seems must be filled. On streets sand is often used, cement or a glue are used indoors. These can also be coated for hygienic purposes, so that the floor tiles can be cleaned easily.
