Moroccan zelliges
Zelliges is the French/Moroccan translation for tiles. Typical for the distinct character of the zelliges are the bevelled edges. This durable process is necessary for the zellige to fit as closely together as possible without a joint. The zelliges are handmade and that is why there are many colour nuances. This play of colours gives the typical appearance to the Moroccan zelliges.
All Moroccan zelliges must be layed almost against each other, with a joint of +/- 1 mm. As a result of the irregular character of the zelliges the joints may be a bit wider at places. The double glueing makes it possible to lay the zelliges as evenly as possible so that the appearance of sharp edges is limited. Non-enamelled zelliges are first impregnated with oil (linseed or oxane oil), this happens beforehand to keep the grout from penetrating into the zellige. You need to wait 2 hours before a new coating of oil can be applied to the zellige. Wet the zelliges before you apply the fluid grout.
The Moroccan zelliges need to be taken from the boxes carefully, you will then get a nice handmade Moroccan style. The zelliges must be layed on a level surface with a white mortar. In wet rooms like the shower cabin you need to make the back wall waterproof. Your advisor can inform you about your personal situation. After 3 days, if the surface is absolutely dry, the light grey grout can be applied between the zelliges. When the wall is thoroughly dry you can impregnate the Moroccan zelliges in the shower cabin with Lithofin impregnator (this will better protect the small holes).
