Wall tiles

Wall tiles are mostly square or oblong in shape, made of clay or ceramics that are stuck to or hung on a wall. The wall tiles are there for the protection of the wall but they also have a decorative function.

Wall tiles can protect the wall from spatters of fluid, and are often easier to clean than tapestry, stucco, or a wall with wallpaper, because a wall tile is often glazed. Especially in places where hygiene is important, like in the kitchen, bathroom or the toilet, wall tiles are glued to the wall.

Tiles often do not join seamlessly. Dirt can accumulate in these joints. Therefore the joints are filled with cement or another filling material. This layer of cement between the tiles however, is harder to clean. In institutions where hygiene must be officially guaranteed, like professional kitchens, these joints are often coated with a plastic layer that is often transparent.

Tiles are often white, but are also available in many colours and patterns. Tiles can also be painted with images. Decorative wall tiles are often hung on a nail or a screw in the wall. They can also be inserted between the normal tiles. Wall tiles that are there for decorative purposes, are often glazed as well, and can also protect the wall.

Decorations can be simple stripes that run along several tiles, but also “works of art”.
